How Ambien Interacts with Herbal RemediesThere are plenty of herbal remedies known to be effective for helping insomniacs fall asleep. Counted among them are potent ones like Valerian, Kava, Hops, and Linden, as well as not so potent sedatives such as catnip, chamomile, and passionflower. However, if you are on Ambien or Ambien CR, you really have to be careful with what herbs you put into your body. Some will help your Ambien to be more effective, but others could have drastic consequences. ValerianThe Valerian plant, a hardy perennial with sweetly scented pink and white blossoms, is native to Asia and Europe and has been used since ancient times as a sleep aid. While it works to drink a tea made from the root, most prefer to take the herb in capsule form, because the tea can have a downright repugnant taste and smell. If Valerian causes your stomach to become upset, discontinue use immediately as it could result in night terrors or headaches. Ambien and Valerian both have a sedative effect, so to combine them at a normal dosage may not be wise. However, Valerian is very good at relaxing the body and preparing for sleep, so a small dose before bedtime may be helpful. Valerian should not be taken while on some antidepressants or mood stabilizing medicines, so consult your doctor if you are on any such drugs. KavaAlso known as Kava-Kava, Kava is a plant native to the Pacific that makes an extract known to treat social anxiety and nausea. It also happens to be a wonderful natural sleep aid. Kava is used in a common drink in Fiji called grog that has a pleasant numbing and relaxing effect. While on Kava, users tend to have very vivid dreams as well as experience a happier mood throughout the day. The best part about this is that it is a non-addictive substance. Unfortunately, pharmacists and doctors recommend that you do not take Kava while on Ambien or Ambien CR. However, many have raved about the combined efficacy of Kava and Ambien. HopsThe same plant that has long been used for brewing beer is also known to cause sleepiness in animals. Do not consume beer when you take your Ambien, as doctors advice against combining the medication with alcohol. However, taking an herbal supplement of Hops or making a sleep pillow stuffed with Hops is recommended. It will sooth your anxiety and numb your mind, preparing you for when you take your Ambien and drift off to sleep. LindenLinden flowers, also known as lime or basswood flowers, are extremely effective for relaxing you and producing sleep. They make delicious tea as well and are not known to interact with Ambien or Ambien CR. If your insomnia is anxiety induced, drinking a tea with linden throughout the day can stave off the anxiety and help you get to bed very quickly. Linden flowers with oats, lemon balm, catnip, and lavender smells great, tastes great, and works even better. Steep for ten minutes and drink at least five times a day while warm. Catnip, Chamomile, and PassionflowerNormal doses of these herbs in teas are not anywhere near prescription strength and will not interact with Ambien or Ambien CR. They are very good at relaxing you, so the soothing scents and tastes will prepare you for bedtime. While you can buy these herbs at drugstores, online stores are the cheapest and most convenient way to purchase Ambien and Ambien CR. |
