Ambien and Sleep - Impact on Depression

Around 80 percent of people who suffer from depression also suffer from sleep problems. Depression makes it difficult to fall asleep and hard to stay asleep. Often those with depression will wake up early in the morning, and when the depressed do manage to sleep through the night, they wake up feeling like they didn't sleep at all! This is why many of the depressed can spend all day in bed and still feel exhausted.

Ambien could cure all of this of course, but antidepressants and Ambien do not interact well. They can be dangerous to consume simultaneously. With depression and sleep problems, it can be a chicken and egg situation. Sleep deprivation is known to cause depression in people and depression can lead to sleep problems. For some people it is difficult to tell.

If your antidepressant doesn't seem to be working, talk to your doctor about changing to Ambien to see how a full night of sleep may affect you. Eight hours of full sleep often leaves people feeling much more chipper and less depressed.

In fact, doctors often say that sleep is the best remedy for depression. If only it were that simple! With Ambien CR - which might be better for sufferers of depression, because it acts to keep the restless peacefully asleep all night - many wake up with an improved mood and more energy. There are plenty of steps we can take to fight depression aside from medication; the problem is that we are too depressed to take those steps. Sleep helps us find the motivation to exercise, to eat blueberries, which help fight depression, and to get more sunlight.

There are antidepressants that have a sedative effect of course. They put you to sleep as soon as you take them, only they make you drowsy all day. When you wake up with more energy and a better mood, you can become more productive and feel better about yourself. While this isn't a cure for chemical depression, it is certainly helpful in combatting it.

Doctors should advise patients with depression to be careful of forming an addiction to Ambien or Ambien CR. If you suffer from depression and insomnia, you should consult your doctor to make sure the depression is not causing the sleep problems. While using Ambien to get a full night's sleep helps many depressed to get better, the opposite may be true as well: insomniacs might need antidepressants to feel well enough to get to sleep.

SSRIs like Zoloft, Prozac, Celexa, and Paxil are among the most effective for helping improve sleep and elevating moods. Tricyclic antidepressants such as Pamelor and Elavil can also help, and one shouldn't rule out the possibility of sedating antidepressants including Trazodone.

There are some excellent antidepressants out there, such as Wellbutrin, that also can cause insomnia. Some doctors will prescribe Ambien along with these, but for others you might not be able to combine medications. Talk to your doctor if your antidepressant causes insomnia to explore your options.

A study at Johns Hopkins University found that sleep apnea patients also suffer from depression in higher numbers than the general populous. While Ambien and Ambien CR are often recommended for those with sleep apnea, doctors recommend that such patients use Ambien with caution. Always consult your physician before adopting or changing your Ambien or prescription drug regimen.
